An addiction can be to substances include drugs, such as nicotine, alcohol and certain types of food rich in fat or sugar (carbohydrates), chocolate and caffeine.

Gambling addiction is on the increase

In the beginning, the substance or action will be associated with an initial pleasure or have been an effective distraction from pain or anxiety.

The problem manifests as the person wants to re-experience and achieve the ‘buzz.’  It becomes a problem when the activity interferes or gets in the way of normal day-to-day functioning and/or causes health/behavioural problems.

Psychological Addiction

Psychological dependence occurs when the activity is the only thing that will give pleasure or relief to the addict.  The mind learns the behaviour and wants to resist any attempt to control or address it.

Physiological Addiction

This happens when the body’s metabolism changes (the body chemistry alters), and the effects of withdrawal become physically unpleasant.
